CALIFORNIA HONORS RENOWNED ENTOMOLOGIST
INDIO, California (January 16, 2008) The Mosquito and Vector Control Association of California (MVCAC) honored UC Riverside’s Mir S. Mulla, a distinguished professor emeritus of entomology recognized for solving some of the world’s most difficult insect problems, with Honorary Membership at its 2008 Annual Conference in Palm Springs. As an honorary member, Dr. Mulla will receive a complimentary registration to the 2008 Conference and lifetime membership in the Association. Over 400 MVCAC members attended the Annual Conference which honored Dr. Mulla January 13-16, 2008, at the Wyndham Hotel in Palm Springs.
Mulla, the sole nominee for 2007 MVCAC Honorary Membership, devoted many of his research years to eye gnat and mosquito problems in the Coachella Valley. “There is little doubt Dr. Mulla contributed to the success and prosperity of the Coachella Valley,” attests Don Gomsi, General Manager of the District, “Without his pioneering efforts towards eye gnat control, the Valley would be practically uninhabitable. His fifty years of expertise along with his recent research and ideas inspired the District’s BioControl facility for the mass production of mosquito fish and other biological agents used today in mosquito control. This recognition is very appropriate.” The District dedicated the facility to Dr. Mulla at its grand opening and dedication ceremony on April 6, 2006. A short video highlighting the life of Dr. Mulla and his contributions to the development of our Valley as a favorite tourist destination can be viewed on the District’s website www.cvmvcd.org.
