COACHELLA VALLEY MOSQUITO AND VECTOR CONTROL
DISTRICT REDUCES CARBON FOOTPRINT
INDIO, California (November 27, 2007) The Coachella Valley Mosquito and Vector Control District (District) enhances its bio-friendly operations with the installation of additional solar panels that will provide an additional 150 kW and generate roughly
18,800 kWh per month for the District. The cost of the installation will slightly exceed one million dollars, which was held in the District’s reserves for this purchase.
“During the design phase of the Bio-Control Facility, the Board of Trustees elected to add solar panels to the roof of the new, adjacent parking structure,” said District General Manager Donald E. Gomsi,” and on February 11, 2006, the District generated its first solar energy.” “This resulted in a 13% supply of useable energy for the District and a
rebate from IID energy in the amount of $101,709,” he added.
With the installation of the additional solar panels in December 2007, the District’s energy dependence on local utilities will be reduced from 87% to 37%, substantially lowering the District’s energy costs. These panels will be installed on the District’s fleet parking structure and will measure roughly 320 feet x 40 feet. It will increase the District’s
solar energy generation by nearly 500%.
The District continues to do is share to reduce its carbon footprint by incorporating ecofriendly alternatives as part of its way of serving the residents of the Coachella Valley.
